A History of the Magnavox Odyssey

The Magnavox Odyssey was the first commercial home video game console and ushered in a new era of home entertainment. It was designed by a small team led by Ralph Baer at Sanders Associates and developed by Magnavox. It was released in September 1972 and overseas in 1973.

It consisted of a white, black, and brown box that connected to a television set, and two rectangular controllers attached by wires. It displayed three square dots and one line of varying height on the screen in monochrome black and white, with various behaviours associated with the dots and games.

Each game used “game cards” made using printed circuit boards that plugged into the console to modify the internal circuitry. These cards changed the way the dots displayed on the screen, and also changed how the dots were triggered by the user’s input.

In order to get the best possible gaming experience, the Odyssey was designed with ergonomics in mind. Its controllers were simple in design and came with a reset button that would reset the individual elements of the game, rather than simply resetting the entire unit.
